Day One

05/26/18 - AKA Day One (sort of)

We left last night around 11pm with Arden driving North toward I-75. He put in a good four hours while Sawney and I slept. By the time he was done, we were just past Tallahassee and headed west. I switched out with him for the next four hours so he could get some sleep. Sawney drove some, then I drove some more, then Arden took over again when we left Shreveport. We are currently headed toward Dallas, where we plan to stay for the evening (at which point we will have put in approximately 18 hours driving in the last 24 hours. Not bad right? I think it's a solid number anyway.

Here's the opening video, and then I'll give you a bit of background (and probably some much needed explanations...)

So here's the background. I (Troy) got accepted to a PA (Physician Assistant) program, which begins in August of this year. My wife (Sawney) is an 8th grade teacher, and has the summers off. For that reason, we decided that I would wrap up my job as a medical assistant early, so that we could go on a big trip before we both start school again. My wife and I love to travel, but we've never done anything quite as....extended, as this trip. We're beginning with a month long road trip around part of the Western USA. Once we finish, we're going to fly to Spain for the running of the bulls.

While Sawney and I were first planning this trip, we mentioned it to her brother (Arden) to see if he would like to come. After some hesitation on his part and some very passionate persuasion on our part, we convinced him to take a leave of absence at work and join us on this month and a half voyage.

At first, we thought about keeping this blog slightly anonymous (hence the nicknames mentioned in the video). We eventually decided against it (denoted by the fact that I used our names to explain everything. Or did I???)

Anyway, that sums up where we're at so far. If I didn't explain something fully, or you have a question about our journey, please feel free to comment.

Glacier National Park

The original plan (as in, the plan when we left the house) was to go to glacier and backpack for five days there. When we got to Yellowstone and experienced lows of 25 degrees Fahrenheit, we realized that we were ill prepared for this experience. The temperature, combined with the fact that they now charge $7.00 per person per night to backpack (we can stay in a campground for that price, with showers and toilets), we decided backpacking was out of the question. We arrived at the glacier national park east entrance visitors center (From Grand Teton) to find out that the road to the sun (the only thing we really wanted to see) was closed until late June. Oh well. We slept at a hostel and decided we would drive to the west side in the morning and see what we could see. The next morning,  We saw one bear cub running across the road, and one glacier. Day 11

(Arden) We awoke from our slumber, still drowsy from the drive yesterday. However, we had a game plan laid out for today's events. Firstly, we booked a tour into Lehman Caves, a well-known attraction for Great Basin National Park, with caves composed of numerous formations including stalagmite, stalactites, and even shield domes, a presumedly rare formation. From there forward, we were to hike about 3 miles round trip to see two lakes, a couple streams, and even more gorgeous views of the two mountains extending into the sky.  The plan started off on the wrong foot. Breakfast was to consist of leftover pancakes and sausage, made from the morning prior. Upon opening the cooler, we soon realized that everything was under water, including the beloved pancakes and sausage. Over the course of two days, the ice had completely melted, and water got into most of our food. We were depressed to see that the pancakes were submerge in water, inside the bag. Day ten

Today we sort of zipped through both Arches National Park and Canyon lands National Park, in an attempt to distance ourselves from the desert environment we've learned to appreciate, but are also tired of. At Arches, we saw four or five, dare I say, arches. The most famous was Delicate Arch (a very popular symbol of Utah). We also saw landscape arch and a few others. We drove through Canyon Lands and Saw another arch. There was some other nice scenery. We left at approximately 4:30 to head to Great Basin National park. We rounded out the day camping outside the entrance to the park.
